English readings, level B1: exam preparation

Level B1 (intermediate) is the third of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): you understand the main points of clear texts on familiar topics, can deal with most situations while travelling and can describe experiences and give simple opinions.

At level B1 of English you move beyond textbook texts: you read stories, opinions and experiences, with more linking words, conditionals, reported speech and a wider vocabulary.

Every English reading at level B1 has audio that highlights the word being spoken, a tap-to-translate glossary, comprehension questions with feedback, a translation with the key words highlighted and vocabulary to review.

Frequently asked questions about English B1

What are English B1 texts like?

They are texts of about 500 words: stories, experiences and opinions with more linking words, conditionals and reported speech. They are similar to the reading part of a B1 exam.

How do I know if I'm at level B1?

Read one of the texts at this level without a translator. If you get the general idea and most of the details, and answer almost all the questions correctly, it's your level. If it feels effortless, try the next level up; if you get lost in every sentence, start with the level below.

Can I use them to prepare for a English B1 exam?

Yes, as reading comprehension practice. The questions follow the usual formats of that part of official B1 exams: multiple choice, true or false and matching. They don't replace a full mock exam, but they give you daily practice with texts at your level.

How can I practise English reading comprehension at B1?

Read the text once without help to get the general idea. Then listen while following the text, tap any words you don't know and answer the questions. Finally, review the new vocabulary. A short reading every day works better than many at once.

Are the English B1 readings free?

There is one free English B1 reading, no registration needed, with audio, questions and a translation. The paid plans have more readings at this level and tools to review vocabulary.
